Tools of the Trade: Jarron Vosburg of JumpCrew

Tools of the Trade is a feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Jarron Vosburg, vice president of growth at JumpCrew in Nashville.

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

My Moleskin notebook. I’ve had it for years, since I began my career in sales/marketing, and I use it every single day at work. In a world where everything is digital and being automated by technology, writing in my Moleskin notebook keeps me centered and enhances my creativity. This notebook has shown me the benefits of writing things down versus typing them. My memory has improved, it’s allowed me to map out and achieve client goals, and just be more organized with my thoughts.

Why is it your favorite?

It’s the size of a wallet, fits in my back pocket, and I don’t go anywhere without it. It’s really convenient to carry for my everyday tasks. Not only do I have the memory of a goldfish, but there’s something cathartic about the tactile writing of thoughts, tasks, feelings, or whatever else passes through my brain during the day. I’ve also noticed that my productivity has increased, and it’s allowed me to help clarify and process information better.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

I first got my Moleskin notebook in 2014. I noticed a stranger using it at a coffee shop and asked where they got it. The timing worked great, because it was almost the holidays and I added it to my stocking stuffer wish list. With the holiday season here, it’s no better time to get off your phone, laptop or device and start writing.

How does it help you be successful?

My brain can sometimes be a messy place, so getting the chaos into black and white helps me organize, prioritize, action, and keep a historical log of progress over time. It’s helped me take action and it’s also a form of therapy. Writing is very therapeutic and at work when things can get very busy and hectic – writing has helped me calm my mind.

Does it have sentimental value?

Absolutely. I never get rid of my Moleskin notebooks. I’ve tried to keep every Moleskin after it’s full and occasionally flip through pages to laugh at my former self. I get to see all that I’ve done, and the progress that’s been made, as well as the occasional laugh or two.
