Basit Ali flagged Shreyas Iyer’s weakness with the bat and urged other teams to exploit it during ICC Champions Trophy

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali took a dig at Shreyas Iyer over his shot selection that led to his dismissal in MUM vs J&K Ranji Trophy match. The middle-order batter failed to fire in both the innings, managing scores of just 11 and 17. Ahead of ICC Champions Trophy, Ali flagged Iyer’s weakness, suggesting that the easiest way to get him out was to force him to play a big hit towards mid-on.

Shreyas Iyer’s weakness called out ahead of Champions Trophy

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ali pointed out that the easiest way to dismiss Iyer in Champions Trophy was to push the mid-on back and force him to play a nig hit. He dubbed the batter’s shot that led to his dismissal as the poorest shot in Mumbai’s innings. The ex-Pakistan cricketer slammed Iyer for throwing away his wicket when the team needed him the most.

The worst shot in that innings was of Shreyas Iyer. The team lost six wickets and the mid-on was pushed back, but you still hit it right there. The easiest way to dismiss Shreyas Iyer in the Champions Trophy is to have the mid-on back because he is surely going to go for a big hit,” Ali said

Iyer will return to international action in the Champions Trophy which commences on February 19. The middle-order batter, who is India’s best player at the number four position in ODIs, will play a crucial role for the side. Iyer had a phenomenal run in the ODI World Cup in 2023 as he went on to score a couple of hundreds. While he has been regularly participating in domestic tournaments (both red and white ball), Shreyas faces a tough challenge when it comes to dealing with short balls and playing shots like those that got him dismissed in the Ranji Trophy.
