How to Diversify Your Audience: From TikTok to Bluesky

Two of the most buzz-worthy social media platforms today — TikTok and Bluesky — could not be more different from one another. TikTok is the wild west of the internet, where controversy often gets rewarded with virality. And then there’s Bluesky, a platform with a small but mighty user base interested in building online communities and decentralizing content distribution.

If you’re considering diversifying your social platforms — including building an audience on Bluesky from your TikTok following — now is a good time. Bluesky — which opened to the public in February 2024 — has already amassed 27 million registered users. And sure, this initial growth is partially due to X’s (formerly Twitter) fall from grace, but influencers and businesses can benefit from Bluesky’s less-biased algorithm. So, the effort required to migrate your audience from TikTok to Bluesky is worth it, and we’re about to walk you through how to do just that.

Let Your Tiktok Followers Know You’re on Bluesky: 5 Steps to Bring Them With You

Spoiler alert: There is no magic trick to making this happen.

1: Accept that there’s no direct migration option

Acceptance is the first step toward change, right? Well, that’s undoubtedly true when migrating TikTok followers to Bluesky because there isn’t a direct way to transfer your following list from platform to platform. Don’t worry — we’ve got a few tricks to help you get through this.

2: Set up your Bluesky account

Truthfully, this should have been the first step, but we wanted to make sure your expectations were realistic from the start.

Creating a Bluesky account is simple: Provide an email address, create a password, and enter your birth date. Then, you’ll be prompted to choose a username. We highly suggest using the same handle you have on other platforms (e.g., TikTok) to make it easy for users to find you.

Once you’re registered, make sure to add a profile picture and bio to your Bluesky account. Without these details, you’re basically a “Where’s Waldo” book with no Waldo — no one’s finding you anytime soon. And again, replicating what you have on other platforms will make your account easier to find.

Georgi Todorov, founder of Create & Grow, suggests making an initial post or two live. While generic, something like “It’s good to be on Bluesky!” will suffice.

“Before inviting followers, I posted a few unique updates on Bluesky — stuff like quick tips and behind-the-scenes content — to make it different from TikTok,” Todorov says.

3: Promote your Bluesky account on TikTok

Now, you’re up and running on Bluesky, and it’s time to deliver the news to your TikTok followers. The easiest way to do this is to create a short video that explains why you’re joining Bluesky and how to find you there (i.e., sharing your handle).

You can take a note from Todorov and put the link to your Bluesky profile in your TikTok bio, making it easy for followers to find you. Another strategy you can try is teasing the unique content they’ll have access to:

“I shared TikTok videos and posts inviting followers to join me on Bluesky, highlighting the exclusive content they’d get there,” he says.

This approach makes sense because Bluesky’s decentralized platform empowers creators to experiment with their content in a way that TikTok doesn’t.

TikTok’s algorithm rewards users with higher follower counts, making it difficult for smaller creators to gain traction no matter how good their content is. So, if you can get your TikTok followers to join you on Bluesky, you’ll have a much better chance of them seeing your content.

4. Find your followers on Bluesky

If you search the web for how to move your audience to another platform, you’ll find one tool mentioned repeatedly: Sky Follower Bridge. Unfortunately, Sky Follower Bridge does not work with TikTok (at least, not yet).

Even so, you can use Sky Follower Bridge to find your followers from other platforms like Instagram and X on Bluesky. Plus, it’s free, so it’s worth a try in our book.

To use Sky Follower Bridge, add the extension to your browser. Then, log in to your Instagram and X accounts and navigate to your following pages. Click on the Sky Follower Bridge browser extension and enter your Bluesky credentials. Voilà, you’ve got a list of everyone on Bluesky who follows you on Instagram and X.

From there, you can follow specific users or hit the “Follow All” button if you’re not feeling picky. (Sidenote: there’s currently a big “follow-for-follow” discourse on Bluesky between the platform’s early adopters and the latest wave of users. Established Bluesky users do not adhere to follow-for-follow and will block anyone who replies to their posts to complain about not getting a follow back. Something to keep in mind about the burgeoning culture of the platform.)

5: Engage with your TikTok followers

Finally, it’s time for the Hail Mary: good, old-fashioned engagement. Engaging with your TikTok followers through comments and DMs is a tried-and-true way to keep them interested in your content and, hopefully, convince them to follow you on Bluesky.

Todorov used TikTok’s analytics tool to identify his most engaged audience members. Then, he targeted them with personalized comments and reminders, spacing out communications to avoid annoying his followers.

“I kept comments friendly and personal like, ‘Hey, I just posted some exclusive tips on Bluesky. Check it out if you’re curious!’” Todorov says.

According to Todorov, about 20% of his most engaged TikTok followers joined Bluesky within the first two weeks of using this tactic. 20% may not sound like much, but remember that Bluesky’s user base only represents 2.5% of TikTok’s.
