A first-of-its kind world cruise promises an epic journey across seven continents and 195 countries, featuring “an unreasonable amount of shrimp,” over a languorous five-year span.
Potential passengers can imagine exotic global ports of call, where they will be able to fluently communicate with the locals because they’ve been immersed in on-board language lessons.
Either that, or they’ll be jettisoned at sea. Moral of the story: do your homework!
The scenario isn’t real, it’s a stunt from Duolingo, a brand that has committed to elaborate April Fools’ Day gags for six years running. And continuing its several-year tradition of bringing partners into the goof, Duolingo collaborates with Carnival Cruise Line for 2025’s prank.
But in the spirit of the “holiday,” play along for now and hear out the executives from both brands as they discuss the strategy behind the fake extended vacation.
The Duolingo World Cruise “isn’t just a trip, it’s an immersive adventure where guests can expand their horizons, both literally and linguistically,” according to Amy Martin Ziegenfuss, Carnival’s CMO.
